Common Snow Gear Fixes You Can Do At Home
With a few basic tools and a little know‑how, you can fix many common snow gear issues at home and save yourself a trip to the shop.

Ski and snowboard equipment takes a beating every season. From scuffed bases to loose bindings, small issues can add up if you ignore them. The good news? You don’t always need a shop technician. Here are a few common snow gear fixes you can do yourself, and when it’s worth getting help.

Minor Base Scratches

Surface scratches happen to every ski or snowboard. Most shallow marks won’t affect performance. To fix them:

  • Clean the area with a cloth and some warm water.
  • Melt in a bit of P‑Tex using a lighter or P‑Tex candle, making sure the area is well‑ventilated.
  • Scrape the excess with a plastic scraper and finish with a light wax.

If the scratch is deep (you can feel it with a fingernail), consider a shop repair.

Dull or Burr‑Filled Edges

If your edges aren’t gripping well, you can freshen them up at home:

  • Use an edge tool or diamond stone to remove burrs.
  • Maintain the side edge angle your skis or snowboard came with.
  • Always move in the same direction from tip to tail.

For serious edge damage, a technician can help.

Loose Binding Screws

Bindings can work themselves loose over a long season. At least a couple of times a year:

  • Check every screw and tighten as needed.
  • Never overtighten - you can strip the threads.
  • If a screw spins or won’t grip, you may need a binding insert (a shop fix).

When to Call in the Experts

If you’re dealing with deep base gouges, significant edge damage, binding plate issues, or anything involving the core, it’s worth bringing your gear to a shop. But for the everyday dings and scuffs, a basic tool kit and a little patience can save you time and money, and keep your equipment in great shape all season long.
